Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

Training & Coaching

The ESD team of CDE is working to facilitate and promote the transfer of knowledge on sustainability topics from research and implementation projects into education programmes within the University of Bern and other higher education institutions around the world.

CDE supports faculties in integrating sustainability and Education for Sustainable Development into their courses, and fosters the competences needed for sustainable development and transformative research. CDE has extensive experience in implementing, co-developing and conducting courses in the global South on various topics (ESD approaches and sustainability topics).

Examples include:

Online training series "Integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) approaches in tertiary education in Cambodia" (2022)

Building on the initial experience in applying ESD teaching approaches at the Royal University of Agriculture’s (RUA) Faculty of Forestry, this online training series was organised for interested lecturers at RUA and other agricultural higher education institutions in Cambodia. Through the training the lecturers were able to expand their knowledge related to ESD teaching approaches. The main goal of the training series was to capacitate lecturers to establish good quality tertiary education through a focus on ESD.

Curriculum workshop series and coaching for the Institute for Peace, Development and Security Studies (IPDSS) at the University of Juba, South Sudan (2021)

The workshop on curriculum update/development was jointly implemented by swisspeace, CDE/University of Bern and IPDSS. Its main aim was to provide a common understanding of ESD and useful tools for IPDSS faculty to revise their curricula and courses. It consisted of two half-day workshops, a bilateral coaching and a restitution session.

Bringing Sustainability Science to Cambodia – Education for Sustainable Development (2019-2020)

The Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) Cambodia and the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) of the University of Bern co-developed a curriculum on Sustainable Development (SD) and Sustainable Land Management (SLM). The curriculum has the aim to build inter- and transdisciplinary competences among young researchers who will, in close cooperation with land users, engage in more sustainable agricultural production through appropriate natural resource management. CDE researchers carried out two trainings of trainers for lecturers on the curriculum. Lecturers were exposed to innovative ways of teaching and learning. Find more information on the project here.
