At the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), we are committed to integrating education for sustainable development (ESD) and sustainability topics into higher education. We are dedicated to promoting the transfer of knowledge on sustainability from research and implementation projects into education programs with ESD approaches. Within our strategic initiative “ESD International” we aim to support higher education institutions (HEIs) globally. We focus on the global South with significant potential to enhance the incorporation of sustainability and ESD into curricula.

ESD International strives to:

• Promote and integrate sustainability topics and ESD into HEIs: We work with institutions in both the global North and South to embed sustainability and ESD approaches into curricula and courses.
• Expand and consolidate a global network of HEIs: Through mutual learning and collaborative efforts, we aim to strengthen the global network of institutions implementing ESD.
• Foster debate and dialogue: We encourage discussions between HEIs in the global North and South, fostering a shared understanding and joint problem-solving.
• Support HEI staff: We assist lecturers and decision-makers in incorporating sustainability and ESD into their teaching, tailored to local contexts and conditions.
• Raise awareness: We emphasize the importance of ESD and sustainability topics, advocating for transformative pathways in education and beyond.
• Promote lifelong learning: Our activities extend beyond HEIs, supporting ESD initiatives that encourage continuous learning and development.
